UI/UX Design Internship @ RBC, innovation team
May - August 2019
RBC’s Technology & Operations Innovation Team is a hub within RBC that partners, experiments, builds and delivers next-generation technology proof of concept, including robotics, voice tech, blockchain and cybersecurity.
As a UI/UX Design Intern, I work closely with product owners to create POCs from wireframes to high-fidelity mockup, conduct user testings and testing analysis on a robotics project. I quickly incorporate ideas and feedback from multiple stakeholders and bring my diverse skillset to support the vision of innovation team.
My work has been praised by executives, managers and my colleague. Nominated by my team for a MAD (Made a Difference) award, and my design also helped the team obtain more than 100K executive buy-in.
Tools:
InVision, Jira, Confluence, Adobe Creative Suite
Work Samples
As the designer at innovation team, I worked on a range of different projects and concepts, from web design to mobile ui design, from 2-factor authentication to dark web monitoring. As a designers coming from art and design school without business knowledge, there is a huge amount of business and financial concept waiting for me at the beginning. I quickly learn and understand concept in wealth management and cybersecurity to create designs that align with the business goal. At some point, I was working on 4 projects simultaneously, which significantly improves my time and pressure management skills at work, and makes me a more adaptive and professional designer.
I also worked on branding, illustration and logo creation to help bring the product concept to life and enhance the physical presence of innovation team at RBC.
Some of my work is confidential and has been moved to the production phase,
thus I am only allowed to show the version with text blurred.
Takeaways
As a co-op student at RBC Technology & Operation, I have participated in so many amazing events and listen to amazing people who work in the technology and financial services, such as Singularity, Microsoft and RBC executives, which really give me new perspective to think about business, design and technology.
My internship also motivated me to step out of my comfort zone: participating in 24-hour voice tech hackathon, giving a pitch of our innovative solution and prototypes in front of 200 people, and quickly learning new technologies and concepts.
Coffee chat is also part of the work culture at RBC, I had numerous chats with designers, developers and executives to grow my network and listen to their career stories. All of these experiences gave me an important life lesson: don’t be intimidated to talk to people who are “out of your league“ and always say “yes” to opportunities and even challenges come to you, this is how you become a better person.
