YÓPO
Restaurant Brand Design
June 2018 | 2 weeks | self-directed project | Adobe Illustrator | InDesign
YÓPO is a brand design project for a Chinese noodle restaurant which provides one of my favourite food: yo po che mian (hot oil noodles, 油泼扯面). In this project, I am trying to practice my graphic design and illustration skills in order to achieve a good balance in composition, colour and typographic. It is also the opportunity where I explore the possibilities of innovation based on the aesthetic patterns I extracted from Chinese traditional art in the history.

Background Information
You po Noodle
You po noodle is a very interesting and popular dish in Shaanxi province of China. The noodle is broad and hand-made topped with lots of red hot peppers. is described as being like a belt, owing to their thickness and length.
When the noodle is almost done and people pour a spoonful of hot oil over chilis, spring onion, and garlic, and the topping sizzles. it combines the flavor to create an awesome accompaniment for the noodles.
Xi' An food is less famous outside China. Even in Mainland China, lots of people have very little information about it. However, it is quite unique brand of Chinese cooking.
Although the dishes look less impressive as they are neither not so strong as Sichuan dishes, nor so delicate as Cantonese dishes, but you will fall in love after several attempts.
Design Process
Women in Tang Dynasty from traditional Chinese Painting/ Sculptures
During this period of time, people believe that the standard of beauty is to be slightly overweight and plump.
Inspiration
I got inspiration from traditional Chinese art to create this illustration of a plump lady as part of the brand logo. Tany dynasty (618–907) is a high point in Chinese civilization, during this period of time, people believe that for women, the standard of beauty is to be slightly overweight and plump, with elegant curves and gentle behaviours. To adjust this traditional style to a modern context, I illustrate a women with a thumb up gesture (to praise the great food), and also convey a chill and funny feel.
I extracted colours from those sculptures as well and create this colour palette. The major shade of the whole project is yellow which is inviting and appetizing.
